Silence as Empowerment in contemporary Dutch decolonial memory activism
In my current research project, I explore the empowering potential of silence in collaboration with decolonial activists, curators and artists.
In Dutch society’s discussions about remembering the colonial past, voice is often used as a metaphor for empowerment (‘we must raise our voices’), whereas silence is often used as voice’s negative counterpart, signifying a loss or lack of power (‘we will no longer be silenced’). Yet, silence is expressive: sometimes it even speaks louder than words, as can be seen in silent protests and vigils. Perhaps the problem was never people’s ability to speak, but society’s ability to listen.

Stilte en zwijgen als empowerment in de Nederlandse postkoloniale herinneringscultuur van de eenentwintigste eeuw
In mijn huidige onderzoeksproject onderzoek ik stilte en zwijgen als vormen van empowerment, in samenwerking met postkoloniale activisten, curatoren en kunstenaars. In hedendaagse discussies in de Nederlandse samenleving over hoe het koloniale verleden herinnerd moet worden, fungeren stem en spreken vaak als metaforen voor empowerment (“we moeten onze stem verheffen”). Stilte en zwijgen worden daarentegen juist begrepen als tekenen van machteloosheid (“we laten ons niet langer het zwijgen opleggen”). Toch is zwijgen ook expressief: soms spreekt het zelfs luider dan woorden, bijvoorbeeld als onderdeel van een stil protest of een wake. Hoe kan de maatschappij leren naar stilte te luisteren?
