Listening to Silences / Luisteren naar Stiltes
This video podcast is a ten episode series and part of my research project “Listening to Silence: Powerful Silence in Dutch Decolonial Practice” (NWO Veni Talent Program, 2024-2028), see here for more info.
In each episode, I engage in conversation with decolonial artists and activists about the active, meaningful and productive use of silence in their practice.
Half of the episodes is in Dutch, the other half in English.

'There's a great deal to be said about silence' - 21 October 2024
Gerlov van Engelenhoven is a cultural scientist who has had a lifelong fascination with ‘garrulous silence’ –silence that is hidden behind words. “When you consciously don’t say something, you are in fact also saying something. Silence can be a weapon, or a shield.”

Begrijpen we elkaar beter zonder woorden? Universiteit Utrecht onderzoekt het op Lowlands
Kun je zonder woorden meer zeggen dan met een goedgekozen zin? Onderzoekers van de Universiteit Utrecht (UU) en de Universiteit Leiden (LEI) zoeken het antwoord op die vraag op een wel heel bijzondere plek: muziekfestival Lowlands in Biddinghuizen. De projectleiders Gerlov van Engelenhoven en Tom Frijns experimenteren er met de kracht van stilte en synchroniciteit in communicatie.

Van griezelangst tot stille kracht: Leiden onderzoekt emoties op Lowlands
De Universiteit Leiden strijkt deze zomer neer op Lowlands met twee onderzoeksprojecten. Van een bloedstollend spookhuis tot een stilteperformance vol symboliek – bezoekers worden uitgenodigd om hun eigen angsten en gevoelens te onderzoeken, en daarmee de wetenschap vooruit te helpen.
